Laser therapy works because the infrared light penetrates deep into tissues, the photons are absorbed by the mitrochondria of the cell and this stimulates ATP production and begins a biochemical cascade to reduce swelling, relieve pain, help muscles relax and accelerate healing. It works very quickly on acute back pain, acute neck pain, TMJ from jaw muscle tightness, sports injuries and acute inflammation. Most patients with acute injuries will feel a little better immediately after treatment but the greatest pain relief will come 24 hours after treatment. One or two treatments may be all that is needed with acute injuries.
Patients with chronic pain, such as osteoarthritis, will need more treatments - perhaps 6 to 12. Maintenance treatments, once a month or so, may be needed to stay pain free.
